According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 200,000 people are taken to the ER every year due to lawn-mower related injuries.
Mowing the lawn might be a routine summertime chore, but it’s an activity that injures 200,000 people – 16,000 of them children – every year, according to statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
When you think about it, it’s actually not that crazy: lawnmowers, weed-eaters, hedge clippers, and trimmers needed to maintain the lawn are among the most dangerous devices in the American household.
Seems too incredible to be true? Then take a look at these stats:
Each year, 800 adults in the US alone, are severely injured by weed trimmers and mowers, and more than 600 of those incidents result in amputation; 75 people are killed, and close to 200,000 are injured with medium-sized wounds; one in five deaths involves a child.
If what you just read seems daunting to take in, it’s because it is!
Read what Jillian Warden, a prosthetic/orthotic clinician at the Hospital for Special Surgery writes: “In my line of work as a prosthetic/orthotic clinician, amputations are an unfortunate fact of life for a small portion of the population. The saddest cases are those that are completely preventable, and these traumatic lawn trimming accidents are exactly that. If you are lucky enough to avoid an amputation after a run-in with a lawn trimmer, you are still going through a very scary and traumatic injury. And let’s not get started on what the family of the lawn trimmer will have to contend with for the rest of their life.”
Here is another testimony from the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) President William Zamboni, M.D. “In 19 years of practice as a plastic surgeon and microsurgeon, some of the most devastating and disabling injuries I’ve treated are from lawnmower and trimmer related accidents. It’s especially concerning since most of these injuries are preventable.”
According to results presented at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in March, injuries were caused most often when people were least expecting and were not using the appropriate safety equipment.
You are not safe until you decide to consciously protect yourself.
The only question remaining is How can you have a great lawn, and stay safe?
The only way to avoid potential harm while having a beautifully trimmed lawn is to wear protective equipment.
Weed trimmers can throw stones, sticks, and other objects at high speeds. Lawn mowers with metal blades can cut through underground objects, splinter concrete, or cause sparks. Hedge trimmers are sometimes heavy, and fatigue can cause cutting accidents.
